When I first started trying to learn more about polyamory, I scrolled through Facebook groups, articles and forums for guidance and support. I mostly found articles portraying young straight people, and while online polyamory groups and forums seemed more diverse in age and class, they all had one thing in common: they struck me as being very, very white. I decided to talk to some other black folks about their experiences with polyamory. We sit down next to the counter; our intimacy protected by the persistent whistle of the coffee machine. We start speaking about her identification with the mainstream representation of polyamory in the media. She begins by telling me about her own non-monogamy and struggles with representation, and I feel a sense of relief. It was reassuring to know that there are, indeed, black women in France in the polyamorous community, ones that might get me, ones that could identify with my doubts and tensions that are specifically tied to my black womanhood. My concerns were not unfounded: my own experience with polyamory brutally threw my blackness back at me.

We hear a lot of stereotypes about the “French lover”, in France and elsewhere. As a Frenchman, I frequently hear that my male compatriots are.
That movie, a documentary made in Paris during the Algerian War, is centered on the psychological effect of colonialism, racism, anti-Semitism, and the legacy of the Nazi Occupation of France. Some were born in France, some migrated to France; some are Muslim, some are Christian, one is Jewish; they are of diverse sexual orientation as well. Though the movie is mainly closeups, it provides, in its brief span, the sense of a distant journey that ranges far through an unseen France and deeply into the lives of people who live there, albeit in the margins of official culture.
For instance, France keeps no official statistics on the subject of race or religion, in order not to enshrine the concepts in law. One speaker says that she used to agree with the idea, but then realized that the lack of statistics made large-scale discrimination very difficult to prove—France can rely on statistical analyses regarding gender but not about race.
