Following this trend, Respawn Entertainment is poised to address one of fans’ biggest complaints with the game with the implementation of an improved matchmaking system. On an overt level, players are able to see the paltry or impressive experience levels of both their opponents and their own team. Often though, this is not the best method of judging skill, with time invested sometimes having a much larger impact on a player’s level.

Much to Respawn, EA and Microsoft’s relief, the hotly-anticipated “don’t call it Call of Duty with mechs” first-person shooter Titanfall proved to be rather good for those who are into that sort of thing. But there’s been one thing that a few people have been complaining about, and unfortunately for Respawn it’s a fairly major issue: the matter of matchmaking. Some players were complaining of teams that were so mismatched they’d pit incomplete teams of players with single-digit levels against full, six-player teams of those who had “regenerated” Prestiged, for Call of Duty vets several times.
Now, level in Titanfall is more a measure of how much you’ve played rather than actually how skilled you are, but it still doesn’t inspire much confidence in the “matchmaking” routines if it considers that to be a good matchup, particularly with lop-sided teams. The problem, it seems, was that Titanfall was prioritizing getting people into a game with other players as quickly as possible rather than ensuring they were matched up with the most appropriate opponents. While this made for a pleasingly fluid experience where you didn’t have to sit around waiting for very long, it also often led to the mismatched situations described above.
Respawn is currently testing a new matchmaking system that eschews speed in favor of better matchups based on the game’s hidden “skill” rating that all players record as they play. In order to try the new system for yourself, join the “Improved Matchmaking Beta ” playlist under the Classic Multiplayer option in the game and see if it works any better for you. There are two major changes in the new update, explained in this blog post from Respawn. Firstly, the game will deliberately take longer to match players together with those of equivalent skill rather than simply attempting to find the first available vaguely relevant game.
Secondly, the game will deliberately split up teams and find new opponents for each, particularly where one team appears to be dominating another in terms of skill.

Titanfall dev introducing matchmaking improvements
